Horizon 2020 Brexit update

30 Jan 2020

The UK will leave the European Union on Friday, 31 January at 11pm and enter the transition phase of the negotiation process when many aspects of the withdrawal will need to be agreed

The key message for all Horizon 2020 participants is that there will be no change as far as UK participation in Horizon 2020 is concerned.  All existing UK participants will continue to receive funding from the European Commission for the full duration of their projects, including those which run beyond 31 December 2020.  Also, all proposals submitted to any future Horizon 2020 calls will be funded for their full duration, this includes projects submitted to a 2020 call where results are not announced until 2021.

The UK should continue to be an active participant in Horizon 2020, this includes the ERC:

  • Consolidator Grants - deadline 4 February
  • Advanced Grants – call opening 14 May - deadline 26 August
  • Proof of Concept – deadlines 23 April and 17 September

The next Starting Grants will be the 2021 call under Horizon Europe, please note, we still do not know what the UK status will be under Horizon Europe so we do not yet know if the UK will be eligible to apply - updates will be provided as these become available.

The UKRI has posted a news item on their website confirming that their no-deal preparations for Horizon 2020 funding have been wound down.
