Mental health and wellbeing support for Managers

A new training offer has been launched to support line managers with the tools, skills, and confidence they need to support mental health and wellbeing in the workplace.

Line managers are often the first point of contact for colleagues experiencing difficulties and are well-positioned to spot some of the early signs that a colleague may be struggling with their mental health. This programme of training is designed to equip our line managers with the skills and confidence to support colleague mental health and wellbeing and informed by feedback provided via the Colleague Wellbeing survey and Colleague Engagement survey and our Wellbeing Commitment

In response to Your Voice Matters Survey, the training will help managers to create healthy work environments, encourage more regular wellbeing conversations between colleagues and line managers (55% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that these discussions already take place), and to increase awareness of the wellbeing support available at the University (81% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that they know how to access these resources).

“Line managers don’t need to be experts, but they do need the confidence to listen and respond. This training offer is about embedding wellbeing into the way we lead and manage ensuring that colleagues feel supported and know the routes for looking after their wellbeing.”

Helen Brewis, Associate Director of Experience, Engagement and Culture
