About us

We take a lean and agile approach to radiological safety. This means that where possible risk assessments, guidance, local rules, Standard Operating Procedures etc. are generic and consistent. They should also be easy to find, then easy to understand.

Faculties, institutions and our user communities are responsible for the implementation of systems and the local management of activities through a network of Radiation Protection Officers, Supervisors and Departmental Laser Safety Advisers.

The Radiation Safety Unit (RSU) monitors compliance against the safety management systems. The appointed Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA), Radiation Waste Adviser (RWA) and Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA) is Nuvia UK.

Who's on first base?

Most, if not all, of your projects must be passed through your local Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) or Departmental Laser Safety Adviser (DLSA) for initial approval. These officers are your first port of call for assistance: your peer workers or local safety people will know who these people are, or alternatively, explore our contacts list.

In addition, all acquisitions of sources of ionising radiation must be approved by the Radiation Safety Unit prior to ordering.

If you get stuck or need help do not hesitate to contact the RSU team. For urgent inquiries, you can find further details here.

Emergencies and incidents

The emergency / contingency plans for accidents and occurrences and also advice on what to do in the event of the suspected theft or loss of a radioactive source are found in the local rules.

Information governance: record retention schedule

The regulations on data protection and information are strict, and guidance for radiation protection records has been taken from the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017, advice from the Environment Agency and local procedures such as the school audit schedule. The schedule for radiation safety records is here. More information on information governance can be found here.
