Outreach and Public Engagement

Bridging the divide between what the public know and what we do in Materials is passionately undertaken by staff and students in the Department. They take part in a range of activities engaging the public with exciting innovations in research or explaining the detail and intricacies of the world we live in. We actively seek out the public, our local communities and schools through exciting practical activities including school visits, science fairs, sharing research at public lectures or taking part in exhibitions.

Some of the activities that we are involved in online, on campus or off-site include:

  • School visits (primary, secondary or sixth form)
  • Online events including working in partnership with Discover Materials
  • School workshops on campus
  • Summer School
  • Department Visit Days
  • Science X
  • Community Festival
  • Discover Materials Science Days
  • Discover Fashion Business and Technology Days
  • Public lectures on various topics including materials for nuclear energy, ‘smart’ textiles, nan-otechnology or aspects of fashion business and technology
  • Activities at Science Festivals including Manchester Science Festival and Bluedot
  • Exhibitions

Get Involved

We are always looking for new people to get involved and deliver outreach and engagement activities. It is a great way to showcase science, build communication skills and interact with the community about our exciting research and innovation.

If you are interested, please email materials.outreach@manchester.ac.uk and ask to be signed up to our mailing list. Please also share this information with your colleagues, researchers and students, and encourage them to sign up to our mailing list if they are interested in outreach.
