Our First AI Round-Up!

18 Dec 2025

In this, our first AI Round-Up, we look back on what has been a fantastic start to the year.

We’re reflecting on our recent activities and the collaborative work with stakeholders across the University and beyond, all focused on shaping our approach and supporting the innovative and responsible use of AI.

So, what have we been up to?

  • The AI Pathfinder Programme has continued to develop and we have begun progressing some high impact projects from our initial cohort of over 60 applicants. We have three projects currently up and running, which we are excited to tell you more about soon. Applications have now reopened for the next intake, so check our guidance and application tips
  • Our second Student AI Lunch and Learn took place in November. With over 50 students in attendance, we did a deep dive into how students really think AI is impacting them, both on campus and in their personal lives. Our University AI leadership team got to talk directly with students from all three faculties on if and how they’re using AI, especially GenAI tools. Students were particularly interested in the University’s approach to AI’s involvement in their studies and assignments, and how to keep the balance between efficiency and authenticity.
  • We created our AI Environmental Sustainability working group. The group is committed to reviewing and assessing the environmental impact of AI and coordinating University-based sustainability initiatives in conjunction with a range of teams including Digital Futures and Sustainable Futures.
  • We’ve been developing our AI Hub to serve as our most up-to-date destination for all things AI at Manchester, with essential updates to the latest AI tools and resources on offer for colleagues.
  • The AI Skunkworks team attended the recent Unit M Open House Event, where we highlighted to 250 attendees the innovative path we’re forging for AI development here at Manchester.
  • We’ve updated our AI Guidelines, helping keep our advice to staff and students as up to date as possible. Read more about these guidelines in the “Guidelines” section on the hub.

We want to hear from you!

We want to hear from you and how you are using AI in your work at Manchester. Have you been particularly proud of how Copilot has made your team processes smoother? Maybe AI helped you work through a tricky patch of data research? If so, please reach out to ai-hub@manchester.ac.uk to allow us to champion your work across the University. Your story could help others use AI to reach their fullest potential.
