Career Development for Apprenticeships
As part of the University’s commitment to improving careers at UoM, we offer Career Development Apprenticeship opportunities for existing colleagues. Currently, over 300 colleagues are working towards advanced or higher-level apprenticeship programmes.
These are designed for colleagues already in post and form part of our wider talent development offering. They aim to enhance skills, knowledge, and behaviours to support career progression within the University.
Unlike our Future Talent Apprenticeships, which focus on foundational skills for new entry level colleagues, Career Development Apprenticeships build on existing experience and capabilities, aligning learning with advanced competencies and preparing colleagues for future leadership or specialist roles.
This initiative contributes to our Manchester 2035 Strategy by:
- Building capability and improving organisational performance
- Ensuring a pipeline of colleagues with core and critical skills for the future
- Increasing workforce versatility, agility, and internal mobility
- Providing clear career development pathways
- Inspiring colleagues to embrace learning and self-development

FAQ's
Should you have any questions not answered below, please contact the Apprenticeship Team apprenticeships@manchester.ac.uk
When can I apply for an apprenticeship?
We typically have two cohort intakes per year.
- Spring
- Autum
Individual requests outside of these windows will be considered, however are not guaranteed with these training providers.
What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a structured training programme that combines on-the-job experience with formal learning. It allows individuals to gain recognised qualifications while developing practical skills relevant to their role.
What apprenticeships are available to me?
As a staff member, you can access a wide range of apprenticeships aligned with your current role or future career aspirations. These include leadership, digital, technical, and operational pathways. Speak to your line manager and get in touch with the apprenticeship team apprenticeships@manchester.ac.uk to explore options that match your goals.
Can I do an apprenticeship in my current role?
Yes. Many apprenticeships are designed to support upskilling within your existing role. You don’t need to change jobs to start an apprenticeship, but your role must allow you to apply the learning in practice and must be new learning.
What should I expect if I start an apprenticeship?
You’ll be expected to dedicate 20% of your working hours to off-the-job learning. This may include workshops, online modules, mentoring, or project work. You’ll also be supported by a training provider and your line manager throughout the programme.
What if someone in my team wants to do an apprenticeship?
As a manager, you play a key role in supporting apprentices. This includes helping them balance learning with work responsibilities, providing feedback, and ensuring they have time for off-the-job training. Resources and guidance are available to help you manage this effectively.
I want to complete an apprenticeship that isn’t on offer
If there’s a particular Career Development apprenticeship programme that you are interested in and it’s not included here, please complete the ‘expressions of interest’ form above and a member of our apprenticeships team will contact you to discuss this further.
How much time do I need to commit?
They are structured around a 20% off-the-job learning model, which must be carefully considered before enrolling on a programme. This commitment should be discussed and agreed with your line manager to ensure the necessary support is in place.
What happens after I complete an apprenticeship?
You’ll receive a nationally recognised qualification and may be eligible for progression to a higher-level apprenticeship or a new role. Your development doesn’t stop at completion; apprenticeships are part of a broader learning journey.
If I have a fixed term contract, can I study an apprenticeship?
The contract duration you have remaining must cover the full period of the apprenticeship e.g. If an apprenticeship was 48 months and your contract had 24 months you would be unable to study on an apprenticeship unless this was a longer contract period.
Eligibility
To qualify for an apprenticeship, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be aged 16+ at the time of enrolment.
- Be a UK or European Economic Area (EEA) or have lived in the UK or EEA for the past three consecutive years.
- Not already be in full-time education at the point of enrolment.
- Not already hold a qualification at the same level or above in the same area that you wish to study.

What happens if I withdraw from my apprenticeship?
If a colleague decides to withdraw from their apprenticeship programme, this must first be discussed with their line manager. Once agreed, the Apprenticeship Team should be informed so we can update records and provide any necessary support.
There are no cost implications for withdrawing from an apprenticeship. This is clearly outlined in their apprenticeship agreement.
