Welcome event for all new staff
- TIC1: University Welcome Event
All new members of staff are invited to this short informal session where you will find out more about what it's like to work here at The University of Manchester. The session is led by a senior representative from Human Resources and there will be plenty of opportunities for you to ask any questions about the University, or your employment here.
It also features a welcome from a senior colleague.
Essential courses for all new staff
Essential courses for new staff is a self-enrol course which covers eight University-wide training topics and will help new staff to know what they can expect from The University of Manchester and what the University expects of them. All the essential courses, listed below, are available in the same Blackboard space.
- Health and Safety at The University of Manchester
- Fire Awareness for all
- Office Safety
- Understanding Export Controls
- Data Protection and Cyber Security
- Diversity in the Workplace
- Unconscious Bias
- Disability Equity
New staff will work through each course in turn and will only be able to access the next course by completing the one before it, so after successfully completing Health and Safety at The University of Manchester, Fire Awareness for all is then revealed.
All new staff must complete these courses, regardless of role or position. After you have completed each course, your Training Record will be updated within 72 hrs. After completing all eight courses, you will receive a certificate of completion. These courses complement the face-to-face local H&S induction carried out by the manager or local safety advisor.

An Introduction to Higher Education
This optional course has been designed to give an overview of the Higher Education sector. It is a great place to start to gain some background knowledge if you are new to the sector or would like to brush up on your knowledge. This course is not tracked and will not show on your learner record.
