Sustainability at The University of Manchester

Sustainability at The University of Manchester (UoM) is about having impact and making a difference through research, teaching, operation, engagement and how our people can lead the way to a truly sustainable world. Being sustainable reflects the commitment of Professional Services (PS) to contributing to the Our Sustainable Future strategy (2023-38), we understand the need to embed sustainable practices within our core business commitments, while ensuring colleagues and students play their role in reducing negative environmental and financial impacts.

Sustainability means consistently supporting initiatives to:

  • Efficiency: Using resources in a way that minimises waste and maximises output, it’s about doing more with less and optimising resources throughout their lifecycle.
  • Effective: Achieving desired results and goals by ensuring actions taken produce the intended impact and that resources are used to achieve outcomes efficiently.
  • Responsive: Ability to adapt to changing circumstances, being flexible, agile and able to adjust to strategies and approaches as needed to stay on track and achieve long-term goals.

The goal of Sustainability at UoM is to create Professional Services environment that:

  • Contributes to zero carbon emissions by 2038
  • Maximising use and challenging our consumption
  • Addressing unsustainable workloads
