Guidance for recruiting academic staff

A survey issued to staff by the Working Group on Parity of Esteem between teaching and research showed that there was a perception that the area of teaching and learning is not always dealt with as thoroughly in the appointments process as research. The Working Group therefore agreed to develop guidance in this area. The resulting guidance is not intended to be prescriptive, but presents suggestions for how to include teaching and learning in the whole appointments process, including advertising and interviewing.

In the preparation of the guidance, the group asked Heads of School to provide examples of best practice and it also considered recent job advertisements for T&R and T posts from all Faculties. All examples used in this guidance are based on good practice existing somewhere within the University, so they have been shown to work in some contexts. However, it is recognised that some approaches are not feasible in all environments.

The guidance is written with posts in mind that have a mix of teaching and research elements, but aspects of it should be useful also for teaching-focused posts.

As the work on this guidance started, discussions with other colleagues made clear that such guidance may also be useful for other aspects of posts and the expectation is that there will be parallel guidance documentation for Service and Leadership, and Research, to be developed by other groups within the University. Hence this guidance is divided up into a general section and a teaching & learning specific section. Guidance on Equality and Diversity, which was already available, has now also been incorporated into this guidance.
