Giving Tuesday

29 Nov 2022

Thank you for your generosity

Over the past year, hundreds of colleagues have given to support our University’s good causes. From helping students, to supporting life-changing cancer research, your gifts really do make the world of difference.

This Giving Tuesday, to celebrate your incredible generosity, we’d like to say “thank you” for all your wonderful support.

Helping Students

This year, many of you have kindly chosen to support our students through the financial crisis. Whether you made a gift, fundraised, or donated your cost-of-living payments to support students in hardship – you're helping talented students fulfil their dreams. You’ve helped provide scholarships and bursaries, enabling talented people to join us here at Manchester. And you’ve made sure students have access to emergency grants – providing a vital safety net for those facing unexpected financial hardship during their studies. Thank you.

“I'm grateful and overwhelmed by the funding I have received from the Cost-of-Living Support Fund to cater for my unexpected costs. I would like to say a huge thank you to donors for supporting students in difficult situations.” – Cost of Living Support Fund recipient

Ground-breaking Research

Many colleagues have also helped to make Manchester’s new life-saving cancer research centre a reality. After the Paterson Building was destroyed by a devastating fire in 2017, critical cancer research suffered a major setback. But thanks to your amazing support, a brand-new building will be opening shortly. It’ll be even bigger and better than before – re-writing the future of cancer. A special thanks to the incredible team of Purple Wave 2022 fundraisers who ran 10K or even a half marathon back in May, to raise over £17,000 towards the new building. Thank you.

Cancer’s Biggest Puzzle

And now you’re supporting the University’s newest appeal with your characteristic generosity – helping solve the puzzle of drug resistance in the treatment of cancer. £150,000 is needed to expand the cancer research team with a talented PhD student, who will focus on the mechanisms that drive drug resistance. They’ll be based inside the extraordinary new cancer research building that you helped create. Your help is already paving the way for life-saving new treatments. Thank you.

One generous supporter of Manchester’s cancer research this year is Prof Rachel Gibson - a Professor of Political Science in the School of Social Sciences. She explained why she’s pleased to donate:

“I’m delighted to support this vital research into drug resistance among cancer patients and to give something back to The University of Manchester. Improving the lives of citizens is at the core of our academic mission and this work is an important step toward that.”

Thank you

Jemma Gurr, Head of Regular Giving, thanked colleagues for their ongoing support this year:

“I’m really pleased that so many colleagues have chosen to donate or fundraise to support good causes at Manchester this year. Your gifts, no matter how big or small, help forge a healthier, fairer, and more sustainable world. And particularly at this challenging time, your support means more than ever before. If you’d like to get involved in supporting our causes, my team in the Division of Development and Alumni Relations would love to hear from you – just get in touch at supporters@manchester.ac.uk.”
