Your invitation to attend our Foundation Day

President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Nancy Rothwell cordially invites you to attend the 2022 Foundation Day celebrations, which will include the installation of our new Chancellor, Nazir Afzal OBE

Foundation Day

Taking place on Wednesday, 12 October 2022 from 4.30pm in the Whitworth Hall, our Foundation Day marks when The University of Manchester in its current form was created in 2004 by the amalgamation of the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). We mark this occasion every October by celebrating our Foundation Day.

The celebrations will include the Foundation Day Address by our President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Nancy Rothwell. This year will also mark the installation of our new Chancellor, Nazir Afzal OBE, and the Conferment of Honorary Degrees upon:

  • H.E Dr Amani Abou-Zeid (Doctor of Social Science) - Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy at the African Union Commission
  • Edward Astle (Doctor of the University) - former Chair of the University's Board of Governors 
  • Julie Hesmondhalgh (Doctor of Letters) - multi-award-winning actress, activist and fundraiser 

The ceremony will conclude at approximately 6pm.
