Trade Union negotiating meeting update

21 Jul 2020

A message from Karen Heaton, Director of Human Resources

Dear colleagues

On Monday, 20 July we held the latest of our weekly negotiating meetings with the campus trade unions. These meetings focus on the proposed measures our University needs to take to ensure we deliver our core goals, given the threats to our financial sustainability which have been exacerbated by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

At Monday’s meeting we had a constructive discussion on proposals to pause the payment of salary increments; introducing mandatory pay reductions and proposed changes to the Redeployment Policy.  We also discussed the conditions which would need to be met to lift any pause on increments and pay reduction should they need to be introduced.

We also agreed to share with the trade unions the headlines from the University’s draft provisional budget for the next financial year which is due to be presented to the Board of Governors on 22 July.  It is important to note that this draft budget will be subject to change as student numbers and other financial challenges become clearer over the coming weeks.

The minutes from the negotiating meeting held on Monday, 13 July 2020 were agreed and you can read these on StaffNet.  The next negotiating meeting will take place on Monday, 27 July.

Karen Heaton

Director of Human Resources
