Summer course - Actively Managing Your Mood

30 May 2019

A four-week course for University staff starting Monday, 10 June 10th

Actively Managing Your Mood

This course is offered by the University Counselling Service and will be held in the large group room of the Simon Building, First Floor, the Wellbeing Rooms from 1pm until 2pm.

Do you find you are losing concentration or having difficulty prioritising? Are you feeling overloaded? Are you noticing that you feel low and/or anxious?

The course can help:

  • Discover how changes in behaviour, feeling, and thinking can help us to relate to ourselves and others in ways that are more constructive.
  • Learn the benefits of learning strategies for managing stress and mood fluctuations.
  • Experience the effects of mindfulness practice on your mood and as a practical way of managing stress and improving general wellbeing.

The course is a practical one, enabling you to experience the effects of mindfulness on your mood and general wellbeing. Mindfulness skills can help with daily and ongoing life challenges and physical and psychological health problems in a practical and very helpful way.

The course will also teach how to use the understanding that comes from seeing that sometimes our usual way of understanding and acting can be the source of problems in our lives.

We will use some helpful tools from Cognitive Analytic Therapy which help us to recognise that In order to solve our difficulties we may need to learn to see how what we do makes things worse.

We can then work out new ways of thinking and acting. This course will look at how worrying about failure, avoidance of criticism and judgement, the high expectations we have of ourselves etc can lead to unhelpful ways of thinking and behaving.
