University partners with FutureLearn to offer MOOCs for online courses

UMW

University of Manchester Worldwide (UMW) has signed a strategic partnership with FutureLearn to offer Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for all online and blended learning courses developed through UMW.

A MOOC is an online course available to individuals globally with internet access.   MOOCs are delivered as a purely online mode of study and include free course materials, videos, case studies, quizzes and assessments.

The University is already running Clinical Bioinformatics: Unlocking Genomics in Healthcare MOOC on the FutureLearn platform. Now in its seventh cohort, the current course has attracted over 2,000 people internationally.

The course, led by Dr Angela Davies and Professor Andy Brass, has been developed in conjunction with colleagues from the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health and the Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine.

Dr Angela Davies said: ‘Working with UMW and FutureLearn has enabled me to explore and develop innovative pedagogical approaches. It’s given me the opportunity to convert my course materials into a suite of high quality digital resources, making Clinical Bioinformatics accessible to an international audience’.

Professor Elaine Ferneley, Director of UMW said: ‘We’re delighted to be working with FutureLearn to develop and deliver this MOOC. The FutureLearn platform complements UMW’s highly personalised, media rich and interactive approach to the digital learning environment. We look forward to delivering an exciting range of MOOCs over the next 12 months, including Financial Management in April 2019.’

UMW was established in August 2017 to expand the University’s online and blended learning offer. With the ethos 'no barriers, no boundaries', UMW aims to open up access to a University of Manchester education anytime, anywhere in the world.
