School students celebrate on Pathways to Law

Around 70 state school students from the Pathways to Law Programme attended the New Year Networking Party at the College of Law in Manchester, hosted by the School of Law.
Pathways to Law is a national programme which puts young people in touch with mentors who can help them with their education and career options.
At Manchester, the programme is hosted by the School of Law and funded by the Sutton Trust and the Legal Education Foundation. All school students who take part are from state schools across Greater Manchester and Merseyside and have no family background of higher education.
The annual New Year Networking Party plays a key role in helping to develop students’ confidence, enhance their networking skills and learn more about the legal profession in a relaxed and informal environment.
This year's event on 6 February was attended by a good number of trainees from Eversheds, DLA Piper and Hill Dickinson and also by law mentors (2nd and 3rd Year students) from the School of Law.
Pathways students and law firm trainees enjoyed competitions and networking games, and this year’s student cohort clearly found the trainees very friendly and approachable.
Holly Golding, a Year 12 student from Bury College, said: “The networking event exceeded my expectations. I made many friends and got valuable information from people in the law profession. I had a lot of fun and it was a very worthwhile event.”
Alia Khan, a Year 12 student from Bolton Sixth Form College was equally enthusiastic: “I really enjoyed the Pathways New Year’s party. I was able to meet various people from the legal profession who offered me good advice with regards to a career in the legal system. They were friendly, open and very kind.”
Mentors found the event just as enjoyable and useful. Sophy Taylor, a 2nd Year Law student, commented: "It was a great chance not only to put faces to the names of my mentees but also to get to know the group as a whole. The atmosphere was relaxed, fun and friendly, and gave us the opportunity to answer any questions the mentees had.”
