Don't let your smartphone be snatched

08 Feb 2013

Phone snatches around Oxford Road are on the increase - follow our simple steps to stay safe.

Phone

The targets are usually students, but one member of staff has had a phone snatched this week. In the majority of cases, the offenders approach victims from behind - often on bike - and take them by surprise.

Simple steps to stay safe

  • When out in a public place, be aware of your surroundings and of people around you;
  • If you’re not using your valuables, keep them out of sight and in a secure pocket, case or handbag;
  • Ensure your phone is password / PIN protected;
  • Install tracking software, as this will make it easier for the police to track your phone should it be stolen;
  • Be alert if someone asks to use your phone – consider the legitimacy of the request;
  • If your phone is stolen, call your network or 08701 123 123 to get your phone blocked;
  • Register your phone on the national database Immobilise. This means it will be easier to return your phone to you if it is stolen;
  • For more information on mobile phone safety, visit GM Police: Where's yours.

In recent months, the police have succeeded in locating stolen phones with tracking software switched on, making several arrests. These apps are free and easy to download so make sure your phone is protected. There are various free tracking apps available for a number of different mobile devices – search ‘gps tracking’ to find one.

It’s important that you remember to password protect the tracking software, so criminals are not able to simply switch it off.

Wallets and cash are also being stolen, but expensive phones seem to be the main target.

As part of Greater Manchester Police’s Operation Student Safe, increased police patrols are operating around the University to deter criminals and provide a visible presence.
