Change to printing system in PC clusters across campus

29 Aug 2012

Pull printing to be in operation from 5 September 2012.

In preparation for the return of students in just a few weeks' time, as of 5 September any printing sent from a PC in one of the central PC clusters will now be handled via the new pull printing system.

The new system offers a variety of benefits, including:

  • Less queuing:  No more queuing at a single device to collect print outs.  Collection can be made from ANY free printer – even one in a different building, up to 24 hours after the print was sent.
  • Fewer wasted prints:  As the system only charges for prints that are actually collected (as opposed to everything that is sent to the printer), it’s harder to print accidentally.
  • Mono printing on colour devices:  Colour devices will be able to print documents in mono and only charge for mono (as the charge is applied for the type of print, rather than the device used).
  • Clearer print queue names:  No more confusion over print queue names, just four clear choices (MonoDoubleSided, ColourDoubleSided, MonoSingleSided, ColourSingleSided).
  • Photocopying and scanning to email: These facilities will also be available on all pull printers, as of 6September.

A variety of communications have gone out, including a signage campaign within the PC clusters themselves detailing how to use the new facilities. A campaign slogan of PRINT > SWIPE > PULL has been used across these communications, representing the 3 step process for use of the new devices.

In preparation for the switchover, most of the existing print kiosks across campus will be disabled. One however will remain available in both the Main Library and Joule Library, until the morning of 5 September (when the new system is implemented).

The updated print kiosks and ePayments web site will then be re-instated on Thursday 6 September, when photocopying and scanning to email will also be available.
