Has your child recently flown the nest to university?

23 Aug 2012

The Undergraduate Student Recruitment Team is looking for members of staff to support an enhanced engagement with parents at the next Open Day on Saturday 6 October.

For this to be credible, we prefer to use staff who have recent experience of a child leaving home to go to university. This enhanced work is in response to the recent Student Barometer survey that showed parental influence on university choice has increased dramatically.

We need staff to support two key areas:

  • to staff a stand in the Whitworth Hall to speak informally with parents
  • to deliver a presentation specifically targeted at parents

Hosting a specific stand in the Student Experience Exhibition in the Whitworth Hall

This will involve offering practical advice to parents as they prepare to send their child to university and to help address any concerns that they may have. There are many other exhibition stands in the Whitworth Hall: Accommodation, Finance, IT Services, Study Abroad, Library.

Full briefing and support will be offered. We have a specific guide for parents that will be used on the day and you can read the types of issues we know they are most interested in from this link.

Presentation to parents

The presentation will be targeted specifically at parents and will focus on choosing a University, key features about Manchester and some of the issues faced when a child leaves home for university. This will be pre-prepared by staff in Student Recruitment, but will also allow an opportunity to present some personal experiences and anecdotes.

Again, we are looking for someone who has recently experienced their child going to university so that any top tips in how to deal with this change can be passed on.  The presentation will last for 30 minutes and be delivered four times throughout the day with time for questions at the end. You will need to be confident in delivering presentations to groups of around 100.

If you are interested in volunteering to deliver the presentation or work on the stand, please contact:

Please state:
