IT Know-How: Six steps to ensure your PC is secure

Tips to help you get the most out of IT Services.

Revised basic security steps:

  1. Login as a restricted access user when using the computer to read email or using the web browser and other day to day tasks;
  2. Use a strong password and do not use this password when registering for services on web sites (e.g. Gmail, Twitter, Facebook, and anything else outside of the University IT infrastructure) refer to Set your strong password;
  3. Install the University supplied anti-virus application for your system (Windows, Mac and Linux);
  4. As an administrator make sure that automatic system updates is selected and running;
  5. Make sure that all applications automatically check for updates, download and install them;
  6. As an administrator make sure the firewall is running.

If you are running the managed desktop, then you need only consider steps 1 and 2.
