Increase in laptop thefts

07 Mar 2012

How to reduce the risk of your laptop being stolen.

During the past week, 13 laptops have been stolen from University premises, including locked offices.

If you have a University-owned laptop, you must:

  • Ensure that it is encrypted in order to avoid any unauthorised access to the data it contains if it is stolen - it is mandatory for all University laptops to be encrypted and failure to do so may have disciplinary repercussions;
  • Keep unattended laptops out of sight, particularly if visible from any downstairs window;
  • Ensure that unattended laptops are secured by a cable lock or placed in locked storage.

If you still have an unencrypted laptop, you must ask IT Services to encrypt it as soon as possible. IT Services will also be able to advise on the physical security of equipment and help procure cable locks.
