Insurance advice for staff or students affected by emergencies abroad

16 Mar 2011

This information is provided in response to the current situation in Japan, but it is relevant to anyone who encounters an emergency whilst abroad on University business.

The University’s travel insurance arrangements for staff and student travelling abroad are supported by specialist services providing medical assistance (FirstAssist) and security assistance (Drum Cussac).

Advice and assistance for medical and/or security emergencies encountered abroad can be obtained by contacting FirstAssist, advising them that the cover is in the name of The University of Manchester:

FirstAssist will involve DrumCussac where appropriate.

More general advice is available from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office:

The University’s travel insurance can be expected to meet claims for reasonable additional expenditure incurred in following Foreign and Commonwealth Office advice, whether relating to evacuation, changes to travel plans or for the cancellation of a planned visit to the area affected. Travellers are advised to retain all receipts or other evidence of expenditure.
