Possible last chance to join USS Final Salary section

03 Mar 2011

Applications must be received in the Pensions Office by 11 March 2011

As many members of staff will be aware, discussions are on-going about proposed changes to the national Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS). Any changes will be determined by the Scheme’s governing body, but could come into effect as early as 1 April 2011. Although the precise detail and implementation timetable for the proposed changes is not known, they could include the following features:

  • New entrants to USS after 31 March 2011 will not be eligible to join the Final Salary section of the scheme and will be able to apply to join the CARE section only;
  • The employee contribution rate for all members of the Final Salary section increases to 7.5% of pensionable earnings;
  • The employee contribution rate for the CARE section will be 6.5% of pensionable earnings.

When the changes are agreed by the USS trustee board, all members will be advised.

If you are not a member of USS and wish to apply for membership of the Final Salary section, this could be your last opportunity to join. All application forms must be received in the Pensions Office, John Owens Building, no later than 11 March 2011.
