Includes works by two leading German composers with the UK première of Cathedral I-III by the young German composer Tobias P.M. Schneid and his compatriot Wolfgang Rihm’s Fremde Szenen I, inspired by Robert Schumann, the 200th anniversary of whose birth is celebrated here. Nurturing the talents of the upcoming generation of composers, the concert includes world premières by two advanced students. Finally, several different instruments portray the drama of Harrison Birtwistle’s Secret Theatre featuring Psappha in collaboration with Vaganza, the University of Manchester’s new music ensemble.

The beauty of Vaughan Williams’ ‘Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis’ is juxtaposed with the quirky ‘Set-To’ by Mark-Anthony Turnage in a celebration of British String and Brass Music.

  • Harrison Birtwistle, The Axe Manual
    Birtwistle describes his Axe Manual for piano and percussion as ‘a compendium of rhythmic techniques’. It is lots more: a complex, rigorous contest pulsing with energy and intricacy, designed for only the most athletic musical daredevils! The programme will include two new works by advanced composers from the University of Manchester.
