Early Retirement and Voluntary Severance scheme

04 Aug 2010

Closing date extended to 29 October 2010

The University of Manchester

The Board of Governors has approved the extension of the closing date on the current voluntary severance/early retirement scheme until Friday 29 October 2010.

In reaching its decision, the Board took into account the continuing uncertainty over future Government funding of universities and the fact that the outcome of the Government's Comprehensive Spending Review will not be announced until 20 October 2010.

We probably won't know the full extent of the budget cuts to be applied to the sector and consequently to The University of Manchester on that day, but we should have a better idea of the scale and timescale of the cuts expected to be made to the budget of the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills and higher education in general.

By extending the closing date for applications under the current scheme to the end of October 2010, University staff will have more time to consider whether voluntary severance/early retirement is right for them.

The University will consider its position on the terms and value of any future severance packages when the impact of the Government's Spending Review is known.
