Find out more about the University's intern scheme

21 Jul 2010

Can you offer a work experience opportunity to a recent Manchester graduate?

Now that the graduation season has drawn to a close, growing numbers of our graduates are looking to stay in Manchester to begin their careers.

This is where the University’s Manchester Graduate Internship Programme (MGIP) can help. Run by the MLP Careers and Employability Division, the scheme aims to identify short-term, temporary paid internships for graduates from our University.

These can either be here at the University or with other organisations and businesses in the region.

Internships here at the University can last from four to 12 months and can start anytime from now until December 2010.   From your point of view, they can be a great way to cover a temporary position within your area or work. The benefits for students include the opportunity to gain valuable work experience which will help them get a foot on the career ladder.

The University has provided more than 35 internships over the past couple of years and have proved a success.

Lucy Millard, Environmental and Sustainability Officer in the Directorate of Estates has worked with an intern and said: “Our graduate has excellent knowledge of the University, and is very enthusiastic and hard working. MGIP takes the hassle out of recruitment, providing a guaranteed pool of talented individuals to choose from.”

And Jane Hallam, Head of School Administration in the School of Arts, Histories and Cultures has had a similar experience: “A clear benefit of the MGIP programme is for recent graduates to gain work experience in an environment which they are familiar with and therefore quickly develop their confidence in the work environment. The University benefits from having enthusiastic members of staff to assist in the development of processes through their recent experience as customer.”
