Advance notice of changes to rail tickets purchased through Virgin Charity Line

21 Jul 2010

Virgin Trains reviews which organisations are eligible for scheme

The University has been using the Virgin Charity Line since July 2009. It allows staff travelling on Virgin Trains on University business, to purchase off peak train tickets and use them at peak times – thus saving money, especially on popular routes such as Manchester to London.

Latest news updates from Virgin advise that any tickets purchased up until mid-August will be honoured, but as yet the University has not received official confirmation that it will be able to use this scheme from mid-August onwards.

The latest news release from Virgin reads as follows:

  • “From 13th August Virgin Trains will offer charity workers a 20% discount on advanced train tickets for any journey that is related to their work.
  • “The offer covers all its routes and includes journeys during peak periods. In order to qualify for the discount staff working for the organisation must receive at least 10% of their income from voluntary sources and must also register as a charity with Virgin Trains.
  • “Staff making use of the scheme must have identification with them or a letter of authorisation to prove that their journey is being made in relation to their work.”

The University’s Procurement Office is currently trying to find out if the University meets the criteria to obtain the 20% discount in future.

Further information about the changes will be posted on eUpdate.
