Young Vic and eclipse theatre bring “SUS” to Manchester

12 May 2010

Two performances at Martin Harris Centre on 4 June

Friday 4 June 2010, 2 pm and 7.30pm
Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama

We are delighted that one of the most provocative, hard-hitting and disturbing dramas of recent years is coming to The Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama on Friday 4 June 2010 for just two performances at 2pm and 7.30pm.

SUS, the multi-award winning play by Barrie Keeffe is a timely revival set on election night in 1979. Britain is on the cusp of change. Two detectives on the graveyard shift in an East London police station exchange bets on which Party will win. Delroy is brought in ‘on suspicion’. The interrogation will last all night.

In Britain, until it was repealed in 1981, the notorious Sus law was the informal name for a stop-and search law that permitted a police officer to act on suspicions, or ‘sus’ alone. Subsequent 2007 anti-terror legislation grants British police similar powers. Sus is a powerful cry against institutional racism and the abuse of power written by Barrie Keeffe in the early days of Thatcherism.
