LGBT History Day at The Manchester Museum

'Coming out of the Cabinet' is a day of free workshops which explore lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer issues, organised and run by postgraduate students from the School of Arts, Histories and Cultures at The University of Manchester.

Our aim is to offer an informal setting in which people of all ages and sexualities can share their impressions and memories of Manchester’s queer cultures, or simply enjoy thinking about the rich heritage of the city. Come along to all three, or just drop in to the sessions that interest you.

10.30am-12 noon: Queer histories in Manchester

In this session we’ll look at queer history in Manchester and the Northwest: not just the well-known Gay Village, but also less well known queer spaces like rural towns, suburban areas and elsewhere. The session will be partly based on postgraduate students’ research, but we’d love you to come and share your stories about the local area.

12.30-3pm: Gender, Sexuality and the Museum

In this workshop we’ll think about gender and sexual identities, how we describe ourselves and the objects we own and use. We’ll be encouraging you to respond to the Museum and its presentation of sexuality and gender. This might mean creating your own exhibit, looking around the Museum for display which say something about sexuality or gender, or something else – the sky’s the limit!– whatever our identities might be – and talk about how institutions record and document LGBT lives.

This workshop will include two parallel sessions, one of which is designed especially for the under-twelves.

3.30-4.30pm: Research presentations

We end the day with a series of presentations by postgraduate students at the University of Manchester, who are undertaking new and thought-provoking research in sexuality studies. We hope to generate exciting discussions
