World premiere of 'Wonder: A Scientific Oratorio'

26 Nov 2009

On 27 and 28 November at Maxwell Hall, Salford

'Wonder: A Scientific Oratorio' was commissioned by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, who are premiering the work this weekend together with the BBC Singers and Salford Choral Society.

The piece is informed by discussions the composer (Alan Williams) had with his father (who is an astrophysicist) and with JBCA's Tim O'Brien.

The Schools programme surrounding the event was hosted by the visitor centre at Jodrell Bank and was a great success - thanks to a lot of work from Tim and from our Schools Programme manager, Julia Riley - not to mention the sterling support of the visitor centre staff.

More details of the project are online at:

Performances are on Friday 27 November (at 7pm) and Saturday 28 November (at 4pm and 7pm), at the Maxwell Hall in Salford. There is an associated projection of astronomical imagery and an exhibition of related work by schoolchildren from across Salford.
