Comment on radical improvements to city centre bus services

16 Nov 2009

Drop-in session for staff and students on 18 November

Red bus in Rusholme

A 12-week consultation on a major set of infrastructure improvements for bus services throughout Manchester city centre has begun. The consultation is an opportunity for you to find out more about the proposed improvements for the area and to influence the design of the scheme.

You will be able to view the plans and discuss them with GMPTE staff at the following informal drop-in session:

  • Wednesday 18 November, 10 am to 2pm, in University Place, South Campus (as part of the CO2ts the Earth event)

Drop-in sessions poster (please download and display if you can):

The main aim of the proposals is to provide better bus connections across the centre, preventing people from having to change buses or pay more than one fare. This will mean reduced journey times and more reliable services along routes through the city to Middleton, Boothstown and Salford, and Didsbury and Oxford Road.

Significant improvements will be made to Oxford Road, where there is a high concentration of university and hospital buildings. Cycle ways and wider footpaths will be introduced, making the area safer and more attractive. Between Hathersage Road and Grosvenor Street, Oxford Road would be reserved for buses, hackney carriages, bicycles and emergency services vehicles only. General traffic for central Manchester would use Upper Brook Stereet and other parallel routes.

Once the consultation is complete, work should start in 2010 and could be ready by 2013.
