08 Oct 2009

Workshop on Wednesday 4 November presented by Daniella Tilbury

Learning for Change: Rethinking sustainability education
Wednesday 4 November, 12.30-4.00pm
CEEBL, C24 Sackville Street Building
Presented by Daniella Tilbury, University of Gloucestershire

This session will consider how we reorient our current educational practice to confront one of the most pressing issues facing our society. Through a presentation and participatory group work, participants will explore the notion of sustainable development and implications for higher education curriculum. More specifically participants will consider how enquiry and active learning approaches may need to be reconsidered to assist communities to learn their way out of an unsustainable future. The session will also review how everyday realities and professional choices are relevant to social and classroom learning opportunities.

Daniella Tilbury is a Marie Curie Professor of Sustainability at the University of Gloucestershire, UK and Director of its International Research Institute in Sustainability. She leads sustainability education programmes for higher and teacher education, NGOs and corporate and government agencies across the globe. Her book Engaging People in Sustainability (IUCN 2004) is one of the most cited publications within the field.

She is the Chair of the UN's Global Monitoring and Evaluation Expert's Group which advises on the assessment of global progress in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Most significantly, she was a keynote speaker at the UNESCO's event at the World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg in 2002 and at the UN Conference in Education for Sustainable Development in Bonn 2009.
