Bicycle thefts and GM Police tagging events.

16 Sep 2008

Reducing the risk of theft - and what to do if your cycle is stolen.

There has been a recent spate of cycle thefts along the Oxford Road corridor at both The University of Manchester and at MMU.

Of course, you should always take steps to reduce the risk of theft, but please be particularly careful at the moment.

All these cycles were stolen from Sheffield/hoop type stands and you'll be glad to know one youth has been arrested recently.

The main advice from GM Police is this:

  • Use a good quality lock every time
  • If you are able to use a cycle shelter, do so
  • Get your cycle security marked or tagged (see below)
  • Make a note of your cycle's serial number
  • Get the appropriate insurance (including theft away from your home)
  • Take a photo of the cycle for insurance/Police recovery purposes
  • Report any thefts to University Security and GM Police

Microchip tagging events run by GM Police - a tracking system to help recovery of cycles:

  • Friday 26 September, 1pm - 7pm, outside the BBC, Oxford Road
  • Friday 24 October, 12pm - 8pm, outside the BBC, Oxford Road

Security marking of cycles by GM Police:

  • Wednesday 1 October, 8.30am - 10am, at MMU (All Saints Park), as part of the monthly Cycle to Work rides
  • Plans for more over the academic term
