Manchester Pride: get involved

17 Aug 2022

We'll celebrate Manchester Pride later this month - find out how you can take part, plus share your views in this year's Stonewall survey

Manchester Pride 2022

Our University has celebrated Manchester Pride since 2012 – even winning prizes on occasions!

This year is no different and we’ll be marking this important calendar date for the LGBT+ community with campus activities, as well as participating in the city parade on Saturday, 27 August.

This year, our parade entry is a collaboration with Manchester Metropolitan University, The Royal Northern College of Music, The University of Bolton, The University of Salford and The University of Law under the banner of ‘Inclusive HEI’s in Greater Manchester’.

How can I be involved?

If you would like to walk in the parade or be at one of our cheering points, please contact lgbt@manchester.ac.uk.

Manchester Pride is a fully inclusive event and welcomes everyone from the LGBT+ community, plus allies, family members and friends, so please do join in on the day if you can.

What if I can’t attend the parade?

Watch our video for a quick summary on ways to show your support:

  • Use our screensaver for the month of August
  • Update your email signature to include your pronouns
  • Display posters and banners in your office/reception area (request from lgbt@manchester.ac.uk)
  • Become an ally to the LGBT+ staff network group
  • Or join ALLOUT (the LGBT+ Staff Network Group) – all intersections of the LGBT+ community are welcome
  • Buy a slice of rainbow cake from one of our FoodOnCampus outlets
  • Tweet what you are doing to @UoMLGBT with #UoMPride
  • Have your photo taken next to the 'Proud to support Pride' banner on Oxford Road
  • Complete our annual Stonewall Survey – this takes just five minutes to complete and everyone can complete it, just follow our unique link.
  • During the run up to Pride we’d also like to remind everyone that we’ve done a lot of work to ensure the wording and language of all our policies and guidance is fully inclusive.

President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Nancy Rothwell says: "The Senior Leadership Team and I are committed to full inclusivity for our LGBT+ staff and students.  The University’s participation in Manchester Pride is just one example.  I’m delighted to see collaborative work with other institutions where we can work together to make our workplaces fully inclusive.

"We’re keen to ensure our trans and non-binary staff and students feel fully included in all our work and know where they can go to for support or to raise a concern.  Our vision is to build an inclusive organisation where our diverse community can be themselves and our new EDI strategy, due for launch in October, will further outline our commitment to LGBT+ equality."
