Critical update to the Google Chrome web browser

31 Mar 2022

Google have issued an emergency update to their Chrome web browser, to fix a serious security issue

Desktop and laptop computers managed by the University are set up to automatically update, so all you need to do is close and re-open your web browser to ensure the update is applied.

This security issue does not affect Chrome on Android, iPhone or iPad.

However, if your computer is not managed by the University, you must ensure you’re using an up-to-date version.

How to check you’re using an up-to-date version of Google Chrome on a Windows or Mac computer which is not managed by the University:

  • Click the three vertical dots in the top right of the Chrome browser
  • Click Help and then About Google Chrome
  • The version displayed under the Google Chrome logo should show “Version 99.0.4844.84”. If it shows an earlier version, follow the Update Google Chrome instructions.
