New strategy to promote an inclusive and supportive community through a whole University approach to timely mental health and wellbeing support

Mental Health and Wellbeing strategy

Our recently launched learning and development opportunities for managers are part of the long-term-commitment to support the wellbeing of all staff and students embodied in the Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy.

The new opportunities equip managers with the awareness and skills to support staff with mental health and wellbeing at work, as well as providing a greater understanding of their role in supporting colleagues’ wellbeing. Focusing on wellbeing at work, mental health awareness and understanding stress, these online courses will be running every month from March until December 2022.

New training has also been introduced for staff who support students. Student Mental Health Matters: spotting the signs, knowing what to say and knowing what to do is an interactive training session with a focus on student mental health (both undergraduate and post-graduate).

We will share more details about further activities as we implement the Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy over the next few months.

The Strategy is based on an inclusive and whole-university approach focused on eight key themes: leadership, prevention, early intervention, support, transitions, staff, data and partnership.

Adèle MacKinlay, Director of People and Organisational Development, said:

“At the heart of the Strategy is the principle that our community of students and staff have mental health and wellbeing in common. One in four people in the UK experience a mental health problem each year. Good mental health and wellbeing is essential for our students and staff to realise their potential and achieve success. Wellbeing is a key priority for our University. I look forward to sharing details of further developments in the coming months.”
