23 Feb 2022

Events and activities will take place across our University

This year's International Women's Day campaign theme is #Break the Bias.

#BreakTheBias is the start for a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination; one that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. Difference is valued and celebrated.

We are all responsible for our own thoughts and actions - all day, every day and we can break the bias in our communities, our workplaces, our schools, colleges and universities. Together, we can all break the bias - on International Women's Day and beyond.

Events and activities are taking place across our University in the week of International Women’s Day and throughout March, providing many opportunities to take part, including:

  • The launch of @WAM – Women at Manchester. This new network is open to all colleagues who are women, or who identify as women, from across all parts of our University and in all roles (Tuesday 8 March).
  • Guest speaker events including: Crossing Continents – diverse challenges and common threads for women in academia across the globe, which will include colleagues from India and Brazil (8 March); Dr Pragya Agarwal – women, bias, race, & (m)otherhood (9 March): and Professor Gina Rippon: The Gendered Brain (10 March).
  • An online Zoom panel event hosted by Melody Stephen, General Secretary of the Students’ Union and featuring Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell that will focus on this year’s theme – #BreakThe Bias (9 March).
  • A series of online events from Alliance Manchester Business School to showcase powerful female voices from Manchester, the UK and across the globe, bringing insight and expert knowledge from a wide variety of industries (8 March).
  • Events to examine and challenge inequalities in clinical academic careers (16 March), explore why it is important to take gender dimensions into account in research and innovation (23 March), and to consider what gender equality means in the context of the research (24 March). We will also be showcasing research from our amazing women academics.
  • A women’s health webinar, and a menopause creative writing workshop at the Whitworth.
  • An update on our Charter Marks.
  • Development opportunities.
