New policy publication On Cancer – launched for World Cancer Day

04 Feb 2022

The publication brings together pioneering research and expertise

On Cancer publication

A new publication from Policy@Manchester, with the Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC) and the Cancer Research Beacon, brings together research and policy expertise to lay out an evidence-based route for cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment in the UK.

On Cancer, released on World Cancer Day (4 February), combines pioneering research and expertise with clear recommendations to policymakers on how to tackle issues across the cancer pathway, including inequalities, advanced treatments, and international collaboration. Published by Policy@Manchester – our University’s policy engagement unit – On Cancer comes as the UK grapples with the short and long-term effects of COVID-19 on the health and care sector.

The publication’s articles provide insight and advice on everything from the impact of cancer on existing health inequalities, to the role of data and AI in speeding up diagnosis and treatment, and the case for investing in life sciences in the North West.

In particular, On Cancer advocates for a refocussing of our healthcare systems, away from acute clinical care, and toward community-based prevention and screening.

Michelle Mitchell, CEO of Cancer Research UK and the author of On Cancer’s foreword, said: “It is my hope that this publication will galvanise interest and debate among policymakers and the broader cancer community – people affected by cancer, researchers, and everyone who shares a desire to make progress against this disease.”

Professor Rob Bristow, Director of the MCRC and a contributing author to On Cancer, said: “I encourage everyone to read On Cancer to discover more about our unique research and technologies here in Manchester as it relates to the gravitas and impact of implementing policies for the benefit of our patients and UK healthcare.”
