WATCH: “There’s a lot of love in the Zoom room!”

How The Whitworth built a community with no limits during the pandemic

The Whitworth play live

The Whitworth has spent the pandemic building a community with no limits for babies, early years children and their families.

The art gallery team took their Early Years programme online and into people’s homes, nurseries and schools, connecting with more and more people as the year passed, from 60 in March 2020 to more than 550 a year later.

Play session leader, Annabel Newfield says: “There’s a lot of love – a lot of love in the Zoom room!”

Early Years Coordinator, Lucy Turner adds that the team has used the pandemic as an opportunity to build a community – “there are no limits in terms of distance” – and it’s also broken down the traditional barriers people face when going to art galleries.

The workshops, specially designed for under 5s and their grown-ups, are 45 minutes long and led by an artist who will guide you through playful activities demonstrating and modelling how simple materials you will have to hand can be used playfully at home. The suggested activities and objects are adapted for different ages.
