University cyclists ride into global top ten

04 Nov 2020

With 1,600 bike rides in September alone, University hits top spot for Greater Manchester and makes global top ten in Cycle September.

Cycle September

Our University is the number one organisation in Greater Manchester for encouraging people to get on their bike in Love to Ride’s Cycle September competition – taking us into the world’s top ten.

The competition has complemented a wider active travel project which aims to build on the increase in cycling we have seen due to the coronavirus pandemic.  Work includes a campaign to raise awareness of campus cycling facilities and initiatives, free Dr Bike sessions and the installation of additional cycle parking.

Sustainable Campus Officer Julia Durkan said: “We are so proud of all the staff and students who have taken part in Cycle September.  An impressive 15,000 miles were cycled and more than 1,600 journeys logged!

“We look forward to participating in more Love to Ride events to give staff and students an extra boost to get on their bike and appreciate the physical and mental health benefits it brings as well as reducing congestion and pollution.”

Love to Ride Greater Manchester launched early in the summer to provide a friendly and supportive community to help people to cycle for fun, fitness and transport and everyone is invited to sign up and join in, it doesn’t matter if you ride every day or if you haven’t been on a bike in years.

In December the Love to Ride community hosts Winter Wheelers, a cycling advent calendar for grown-ups, when there will be daily giveaways of winter cycling gear to help you ride through the dark and cold months of the year.

To be a part of the transformation, dubbed the ‘cycling and walking revolution’ by Mayor Andy Burnham and Walking and Cycling Commissioner Chris Boardman, take a minute to sign up at:
