RESOLVED: Access to University email accounts

30 Apr 2020

Access to all University mailboxes has now been restored for staff and postgraduate research students

On Tuesday 28 April, IT Services identified a problem with one of the University's email servers, resulting in a risk of data loss. It became essential to restart the server to recover the service and ensure data resilience. This was anticipated to be a quick restart with a short outage, however, there was an issue with restoring services and a large number of mailboxes become unavailable. This meant that a number of colleagues, including postgraduate research students, were unable to access their University email accounts. This included access to some shared mailboxes.

Our email team worked hard to resolve the problem as quickly as possible, with mailboxes coming back online incrementally.

Any emails sent to you during the outage will have come through to your account once your service was restored. Our email routers are designed to hold mail for a week in the event of a system failure, so emails should not have bounced. You shouldn't need to do anything different to normal.

We can only apologise for the interruption to service, which was not expected.

Colleagues transferred to Office 365 were not affected.
