Peer Support recognises the outstanding contribution of students and staff

05 Apr 2019

The event recognises all student and staff members who give their time and energy to provide all first-years with either Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) or peer mentors, along with a wide variety of other peer-led initiatives

Peer Support was honoured to hold its 21st Annual Celebration Evening on 3 April at the Renaissance Hotel - a true celebration of student-led activity and partnership between students and staff across the University and Students’ Union.

Professor Clive Agnew, Vice President for Teaching, Learning and Students, gave a welcome speech to over 300 students and staff who came along to celebrate their achievements. We were also delighted to have Chancellor Lemn Sissay join us to present the Outstanding Contribution Awards and share in the experience.

Of our nearly 2000 students and staff involved in Peer Support in their subjects, 23 individuals received the Outstanding Contribution Award for their leadership, innovation, creativity and for going above and beyond in their roles.

We also announced the winners for our newly designed Outstanding Scheme Awards and are thrilled to announce the winners below.

  • Newcomer of the Year: Volunteering Champions
  • Legacy Award: Physics & Astronomy PASS (runners up: Aerospace Engineering PASS)
  • Unsung Scheme of the Year: Nursing Peer Mentoring (runners up: Fashion Business PASS)
  • Innovator of the Year: Geography Peer Mentoring (runners up: Chemical Engineering PASS)
  • Community of the Year: Psychology Peer Mentoring (runners up: Mechanical Engineering PASS)

A total of £86 was raised for Undergraduate Access Scholarships through a raffle with some hotly contested prizes including a coffee machine and an inflatable pineapple!

We want to take this opportunity, not just to thank and congratulate the winners, but to extend our gratitude to everyone involved in peer support initiatives across the University. Our schemes could not run without the support of staff and student volunteers; you all have a huge impact on the lives of new undergraduate students.

All that’s left to say is thanks again and we look forward to our 22nd Annual Celebration Evening and celebrating the 25th birthday of Peer Support!
