Statement: University network issues on Sunday 2 December

03 Dec 2018

On Sunday 2 December, the University network experienced a loss of connectivity for a number of hours

Several weeks ago, one of our suppliers informed us that they were performing essential maintenance to repair some of their network equipment on Sunday 2 December. Based on the information supplied, we immediately put plans into place which were intended to ensure that our staff and students would continue to have uninterrupted network access. However, this maintenance included additional work which we hadn’t been made aware of, which resulted in our staff and students being unable to carry out their work, study and research for several hours.

We acknowledge that there was a delay in publishing information about these issues. We’re now going to review how we use our communications channels outside of regular working hours, to ensure that – if needed – any urgent updates can be published on appropriate channels at any time of day.

We sincerely apologise to all our staff and students for this unacceptable loss of access; we are very aware of the inconvenience this caused, and would like to emphasise that we are working very closely with our supplier to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

All connectivity issues should now be resolved. In the meantime, anyone experiencing any IT issues should call our IT Support Centre on 0161 306 5544.
