Open Access Week is being celebrated internationally from 22 – 28 October 2018 and colleagues across the University are encouraged to enjoy a wide range of activity including a film screening, pop up events and more.

The week is an opportunity for everyone to learn more about the public value and research impact of sharing our research freely and widely.

This year’s theme focuses on removing barriers and designing equitable foundations for open knowledge and a number of events have been organised by The University of Manchester Library’s Research Services and Academic Engagement teams.

A key highlight will be a film screening of ‘Paywall: The Business of Scholarship’ on Wednesday, 24 October at 2.30pm in the Samuel Alexander Theatre. This documentary advocates the case for Open Access to research and science and will be introduced by Dr Rachael Ainsworth, an inspiring advocate for openness through her Resources for Open Science in Astronomy (ROSA) project. Register your interest on Eventbrite.

Other events include Open Access pop-ups with Academic Engagement Librarians with no need to book in advance. Just drop in at one of the following sessions:

  • Monday, 22 October, 12.30 - 1.30pm, Maths and Social Sciences (MSS) Tower, Ground Floor Entrance
  • Tuesday, 23 October, 12.30 - 1.30pm, Jean McFarlane Building, Lobby
  • Tuesday, 23 October, 1 - 2pm, Arthur Lewis Building, Atrium Entrance

There will also be a My Research Essentials workshop entitled ‘Open Access in five simple steps’ on Tuesday, 23 October from 12.30 - 1.30pm and colleagues are encouraged to watch out for more details of our Open Research Forum (ORF) entitled ‘How can openness improve the research environment?’ on Monday, 5 November which is supported by the Vice President for Research, Professor Colette Fagan.
