Our Future - your Big Ideas (so far!)

12 Oct 2018

Help shape a new vision and future strategic direction for the University

Our Future event

So far, over 100 colleagues have attended the engagement sessions that the Faculty has been running to discuss the Big Ideas that will help shape a new vision and future strategic direction for the University.

The meetings include two desktop discussion sessions where staff are asked to think about what the University of the future should stop doing, and conversely what it should focus on. Delegates are also asked to discuss the key risks and opportunities facing the HE sector; and finally, each table is asked to present its one Big Idea for the future.

A number of common themes are already emerging from the three events held to date, principally around developing an institution that offers flexible, lifelong learning; that works more closely with industry and commerce; and that has a truly global presence.

A selection of just a few of the Big Ideas put forward to date are outlined below:

  • Develop closer links with industry Allow industry to have a greater input into the HE agenda to ensure we deliver what industry and future employers want
  • Personalised, flexible education Tailor our teaching and learning on an individual basis, delivered innovatively on-line, to ensure students have the relevant skillset for their chosen career
  • Create a federated global University Create a worldwide presence by working with partner universities around the globe to sell ‘the Manchester way’
  • Focus on student wellbeing  Support students more with their physical and mental wellbeing, as well as their academic education, to create the best possible ambassadors for the University
  • Develop a more flexible University Focusing more on what the University does best, to create a potentially smaller, more flexible and agile institution
