Cast your vote for the Shirley Baker exhibition in this year's CityLife awards

12 Jan 2018

The Shirley Baker exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery has been nominated for a CityLife Award for the best arts exhibition or event

The exhibition, held last year, showcased Baker’s pioneering street photography of Manchester and Salford from the sixties to the eighties. Her photos showed the urban clearances as whole streets were demolished and residents moved into new tower blocks, and she also showed everyday life on the street, with neighbours chatting and children playing.

Sociologists Penny Tinkler and Laura Fenton interviewed people who lived in the streets photographed by Baker at the time, collecting the stories behind the photos.
