What is Dementia Friends?

Dementia Friends is an Alzheimer’s Society’s initiative and one of the University's Social Responsibility flagship programmes. Raising awareness of dementia is one very small step that we can all take, regardless of whether we have any direct experience of dementia.

Anyone can attend and the University runs these informative 50 minute sessions over lunch time in Staff Learning & Development, 5th Floor, Roscoe Building.

You can read more about the initiative and sign up for any of the following dates:

Wednesday, 10 January 12pm until 1pm   

Friday, 9 February 12pm until 1pm

Tuesday, 6 March 12pm until 1pm  

Tuesday, 10 April 12pm until 1pm  

Wednesday, 16 May 12pm until 1pm 

Thursday, 7 June 12pm until 1pm 

Some dementia facts:

  • There are 800,000 people with dementia in the UK with numbers set to rise to 1.7 million by 2050.
  • One in three people over 65 will die with dementia.
  • There are over 17,000 people under 65 with dementia in the UK.
  • Symptoms of dementia include memory loss, confusion and problems with speech and understanding. Dementia is a terminal condition.
