University wins higher education equality and diversity award

18 May 2017

We Get It campaign honoured for its impact and success on campus – and helping other universities set up their own

UHR awards

The University has won the Equality and Diversity award in the Universities Human Resources Awards for Excellence in HR.

The awards recognise outstanding and innovative projects, teams and individuals that have led transformational change in their organisations.

The Equality and Diversity award honours those with a successful and impactful initiative involving equality or diversity.

The University of Manchester has policies in place to enable students and staff to report bullying and harassment. But the 2015 staff survey and feedback from the Students' Union revealed that many potential cases were slipping through the cracks.

Our “We Get It” Campaign, which is a joint campaign between the University and the Students Union, set out to raise awareness of bullying and harassment, and its impact on victims and the entire community. It also provided a simpler and more effective way to report such incidents, and receive support and advice. It was launched with a print and digital campaign, and evolved with the launch of a “Report and Support” platform in February 2017.

The online platform allows staff and students to report issues anonymously and get support from trained harassment advisors. This enables the university to monitor for themes and issues.

The initiative has seen a rise in reporting, and the University is now more able to identify and act on key areas of concern. Several universities and Students Unions across the UK have requested support from Manchester in setting up their own campaigns.
