Global Development Institute alumna elected to African Union

Dr Amani Abou-Zeid will serve as the African Union Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy

Global Development Institute alumna Dr Amani Abou-Zeid has been elected to the African Union as Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy. Dr Abou-Zeid was sworn in on 31 January 2017 and will for serve four years.

Dr Abou-Zeid earned her PhD in Development Administration and Management at GDI in 2001, supervised by GDI's Executive Director Professor David Hulme and Professor Pandeli Glavanis (now based at The American University in Cairo).

Originally from Egypt, Dr Abou-Zeid has had a distinguished career since her graduation from the University, most recently serving as Director of the African National Resources Centre at the African Development Bank. Prior to this, she worked at the United Nations Development Programme, with a focus on infrastructure and energy programmes.

She has also been decorated with the Wissam Alaouite by HM King Mohamed VI of Morocco, selected as one of the 50 Most Influential Women in Africa and recognised as a World Young Leader by the European Union.
