Putting the Staff Survey into action: communications

09 Sep 2016

In the months since the results of the 2015 Staff Survey were published, a project team, led by the Division of Communications and Marketing, has been working on a number of initiatives to deliver better communication

Your Voice, Our Manchester

The results from the 2015 Staff Survey revealed that:

  • many respondents do not feel there are effective channels for them to feed their views upwards in the University (45%), some 37% do not feel, on the whole, communication in the University is effective, and the same proportion (37%) do not feel communications between teams/sections are effective;
  • some 27% of respondents do not feel the President’s Senior Leadership Team listen and respond to the views of staff and 22% do not feel they communicate well and keep staff informed on important issues.

In response, Rachael McGraw, Head of Communications in the Division of Communications and Marketing, has been leading a project to look at ways of improving two-way internal communications.

Rachael said "The project team will be developing a plan to improve two-way leadership communications to support change and improve scores in staff communications questions in the 2017 Staff Survey.

"We are working in partnership with Faculty internal communications teams and will be auditing current activity and implementing a programme to improve two-way communication."

The plan will be delivered by October 2016 and will be evaluated in June 2017.
