How our students are changing lives in Uganda

06 Sep 2016

Faith makes everything possible, Hope makes everything work…

Children in Jinja

Last summer twelve students spent an exciting month in Uganda volunteering with S.A.L.V.E. International, a small charity working to reduce the number of children on the streets of Jinja.  They ran environmental, IT, and community research activities and holiday camps.

This summer a new team returned for a month to build on last year’s achievements.  They have been delivering community research and social enterprise projects alongside the holiday camps for children and young people living on the streets.

Each day, a member of the team blogs about their inspiring and life-changing work.

Shahera Khatun-Ali, an English Language for Education second year student, wrote: “I can’t pretend that the community work is all easy, it was heartbreaking to watch children gazing through school gates, at other children laughing and playing in school.  Yet, knowing I was part of a team working to instigate change suddenly felt really rewarding.

“The positivity amongst these communities was really motivational; a particular quote I loved was hung in a local high school stating: ‘Faith makes everything possible, Hope makes everything work, Love makes everything beautiful, May you have all the things as you begin each day’.”
